Uganda Family Journey

Three parks at a pace that respects how children actually travel.

A Rothschild's giraffe standing in open grassland
Duration
8 days, 7 nights
Parks
Lake Mburo, Queen Elizabeth, Kibale
Vehicle
Private 4x4 and guide
Pace
Deliberately unhurried

Most Uganda itineraries assume adults who can sit in a vehicle for seven hours. This one does not. Driving days are broken and shortened, activities alternate between water, walking and game drives, and there is genuine downtime built in rather than left over. It also avoids gorilla trekking, which has a minimum age set by the wildlife authority.

Highlights

  • Lake Mburo first, so the initial drive is short and the first safari is easy
  • Boat trips at Lake Mburo and on the Kazinga Channel
  • Chimpanzee tracking in Kibale for older children
  • The Bigodi community walk, which children tend to remember longest
  • Private vehicle throughout, with room to spread out

Who this suits

Families with children, and multi-generational groups travelling together.

Pace. Deliberately unhurried. No drive over five hours, two nights minimum everywhere.

Day by day

Drive times are realistic rather than optimistic, and every one includes the stops.

  1. Day1

    Entebbe to Lake Mburo

A stop at the equator crossing and lunch in Masaka break the drive. Evening game drive among zebra and impala.

4 – 5 hours Family tented camp at Lake Mburo
  2. Day2

    Lake Mburo

Morning boat trip on the lake, afternoon walking safari or cycling. Short days, early finish.

  3. Day3

    Lake Mburo to Queen Elizabeth

4 – 5 hours Family lodge in the northern sector
  4. Day4

    Kasenyi and the Kazinga Channel

Dawn game drive, long midday break, then the afternoon boat cruise — three hours, shaded and stable, and the easiest activity of the trip for young children.

    In-park only Same lodge
  5. Day5

    Crater lakes and free afternoon

Morning crater lake drive along the escarpment. Afternoon free at the lodge.

    Local Same lodge

2 – 3 hours Forest lodge near Kibale
  7. Day7

    Kibale

Chimpanzee tracking for those old enough and able for it, or the Bigodi wetland walk for everyone. Both can run on the same morning for a split group.

    Local Same lodge
  8. Day8

    Return to Entebbe

East through Fort Portal and Mubende, with stops planned. Timed to your flight.
